How does gondola shelving ship — and what should you have ready?

Gondola shelving ships knocked down — uprights, shelves, and panels stacked flat on pallets — by LTL (less-than-truckload) freight. A palletized run weighs hundreds of pounds, so it moves on a pallet jack, not by hand. If your location has no loading dock, the truck needs a liftgate to lower pallets to the ground — say so when ordering, because it changes the freight service. In-stock colors leave our warehouse in 1–2 business days; LTL transit adds roughly 1–5 business days depending on distance.
What arrives on the truck
Nothing arrives assembled. Expect banded pallets of uprights and base shoes, stacked shelves, bundled back panels, and boxed small parts — organized by part type, which is exactly how you want to stage them for assembly. Unload with the labels visible and keep same parts together (our installation guide covers the build order).
The freight terms that change your delivery
- •Dock delivery — you have a loading dock; pallets roll off. The simplest, cheapest option.
- •Liftgate — no dock: the truck carries a powered gate that lowers pallets to street level. Must be requested up front.
- •Curbside — standard freight ends at the curb; the driver is not required to bring pallets inside.
- •Inside delivery — an extra service where the carrier moves pallets past the door. If you need it, ask for it explicitly.
- •Residential / limited-access — tight streets, strip malls without docks, and residential zones carry surcharges carriers apply automatically.
What freight costs
Freight is priced by weight, pallet count, distance, and the services above — which is why fixture vendors (including us) quote it per order rather than publishing a flat rate. The difference: our delivered quote shows freight as its own line item before you commit, so the fixture price you compared is never quietly absorbing it.
Receiving day: the two-minute inspection that protects you
- •Count pallets against the delivery receipt before signing.
- •Walk around each pallet — crushed corners, torn wrap, bent uprights get noted on the receipt before the driver leaves.
- •Concealed damage found later must typically be reported within days — open and check promptly.
Lead-time reality
Stock colors (Black and Antique White) ship in 1–2 business days. Special-order colors add weeks — plan store openings around the stock palette or order early.
