What’s actually included when you buy a gondola shelving "section"?

One gondola "section" (also called a bay or unit) is a 3-foot or 4-foot slice of a run, and it includes: the upright frame, base shoes, one base shelf with kickplate, back panels, and the spanners that tie it to the next section. What it usually does NOT include is the adjustable upper shelves — those are typically sold per shelf, and that gap is the single biggest reason two quotes for "the same shelving" can be hundreds of dollars apart.
Anatomy of a section
- •Upright — the slotted vertical post. Sections share uprights: a 20-ft run has 6 uprights, not 10.
- •Base shoes — the feet, with built-in levelers. Double-sided islands take shoes on both sides.
- •Base shelf + kickplate — the fixed bottom deck (our heaviest-duty shelf) and the snap-on front plate below it.
- •Back panels — pegboard or solid hardboard, sliding down between uprights. Islands take backs on both faces.
- •Spanners — top, center, and lower rails that lock the run together and square it up.
- •Upper shelves — adjustable, hang in the upright slots on brackets. Usually priced per shelf, per depth.
Starter vs add-on: the ordering math
The first section in a run is a starter — it needs uprights on both ends. Every section after it is an add-on that shares an upright with its neighbor, so it costs less. A 20-ft run is 1 starter + 4 add-on sections (five 48" bays, six uprights). You never order five starters — and a quote that prices every section as a standalone unit is overcharging you by an upright per section.
The upper-shelf trick (how quotes hide cost)
When a quote looks suspiciously cheap, count the shelves. Many advertised "section" prices include zero upper shelves — the parts that actually hold your product. At four tiers per side, a double-sided section carries 8 upper shelves plus 16 brackets, and that can rival the cost of the frame itself. Before comparing quotes, fix the spec: same shelf count, same shelf depths, brackets included.
