Does gondola shelving need to be anchored to the floor?

A normally-proportioned double-sided island — say 54–72 inches tall on 16–22 inch bases — stands free on its levelers and does not need floor anchors. Anchoring becomes necessary when the geometry gets tippy or the location demands it: single-sided wall units should be secured to the wall, runs over 96 inches tall should be anchored, a good rule of thumb is to anchor any run whose height exceeds six times its total base depth, and seismic jurisdictions (notably California) set fixture-height thresholds above which anchoring — and sometimes engineering — are required. Confirm with your local building department.
Why islands stand free
A double-sided island is a wide-based, low-center structure: two loaded base shelves put most of the weight in the bottom foot of the fixture. Levelers in the base shoes handle floor variation. This is why center-store gondola has run freestanding in retail for decades — stability comes from the geometry, not from bolts.
The situations that DO call for anchoring
- •Single-sided wall units — secure them to the wall structure (studs on drywall, masonry anchors on block). A wall unit has half the base of an island at the same height.
- •Tall runs — above 96 inches, anchor regardless of type.
- •Narrow-footprint runs — rule of thumb from manufacturer install guidance: if height exceeds 6× the total base depth, anchor it.
- •Freestanding single-sided runs — a wall-type unit used as a room divider has no wall to lean on; anchor the base.
- •Seismic jurisdictions — California and other seismic states set fixture-height thresholds (commonly cited around 5'9") above which anchoring, and for tall or heavy fixtures engineered anchorage, are required. Your building department or fire marshal is the authority.
Anchoring is cheap; tipping is not
Floor anchors are inexpensive brackets that engage the base-shoe levelers and screw to the slab — roughly an hour of extra install time per run. When in doubt, anchor: the cost is trivial next to a loaded run going over, and anchors relocate with the run if you reconfigure.
One rule with no exceptions
Whatever you anchor or do not anchor: never install shelves and load on a side of an upright that has no base shoes on that side, and keep heavy product low. Most tip-overs are loading problems, not anchoring problems.
