How much weight can gondola shelving hold?

On the shelving we sell, the fixed base shelf is rated to 600 pounds, and adjustable upper shelves carry 300–500 pounds each, evenly loaded — deeper shelves and longer spans sit at the lower end of that range. Those are per-shelf ratings, not per-section: a loaded double-sided section routinely carries well over a ton. The ratings assume weight spread across the shelf and brackets fully seated in the upright slots.
Why every vendor quotes a different number
Search results claim anything from 150 to 500 pounds "per shelf" — usually without saying which shelf. Capacity depends on the shelf depth (a 12" shelf is stiffer than a 24" one), the span (48" shelves flex more than 36"), the bracket engagement, and whether the load is spread or piled at the front edge. A number without those qualifiers is marketing, not engineering.
Even loading vs front loading — the rule that actually matters
Shelf ratings assume the weight is spread across the shelf. Product stacked at the front lip acts on a longer lever arm against the brackets and upright — the same pounds stress the fixture much harder. Manufacturer load charts rate front-loaded shelves at roughly half the even-load figure. Rule of thumb: heavy goods sit back against the upright, and the heaviest tier is always the base shelf.
The loading rules that keep a run safe
- •Heaviest merchandise on the base shelf — it is the strongest shelf and the lowest center of gravity.
- •Balance island runs side to side — a heavily one-sided load can lean a freestanding run.
- •Seat every bracket fully in its upright slots before loading; a half-seated bracket is how shelves fail.
- •Never install shelves on a side of an upright that has no base shoe on that side.
- •Do not climb on shelving, and never move an assembled run while loaded.
A worked example: 40-lb pet food bags
